Proactol Fat Binder
from Proactol LtdProduct description
Proactol is a blend of natural ingredients - most notably Prickly Pear, which is a kind of cactus - made into pill form. The theory is that you take one of these pills with every meal and the ingredients 'bind' to the fat and prevent it from being absorbed by your body.
You've probably heard a few things about Proactol already as it's received a wealth of media coverage recently. Proactol was featured as one of the Daily Telegraph's 'Best Natural Ways To Diet in 2009'. Proactol has also been acclaimed in newspapers The Daily Mail and The Daily Express, and in magazines such as Cosmopolitan and Florida Style Magazine.
But as always we seek to delve behind the media hype and ask: How much of it is true?
Product Research
How Does Proactol Work?
Proactol is a 'fat binder', the ingredients in Proactol diet pills literally bind to the fat in your meals and prevent it from being absorbed by your body. What this means in practice is that you take a couple of Proactol pills with a glass of water after every meal and a significant portion of the fat in that meal passes straight through you rather than heading to your tummy, hips and thighs!
The fibre blend in Proactol also results in a slower transition time through your digestive system, meaning you feel fuller for longer and are therefore less tempted to snack between meals.
What's The Evidence?
The Internet is awash with testimonials from Proactol users. Tales such as Linda Johnson's are common:
"After having 2 kids, I was shocked to find that I had put on 30lbs. Since taking Proactol though I have felt a real difference in my weight loss. It has taken the edge completely off my appetite, allowing me to reduce my meal sizes and feel good about my body."

Men and women of all ages, from students to retirees, report steady weight loss by combining Proactol with basic healthy eating and exercise. You can read and hear many more testimonials here. One or two testimonials can be ignored, but the sheer weight of numbers here makes us take notice. Surely this many people can't be wrong?
Medical Trials
After conducting further research we at Weight Loss Report discovered that there have indeed been several clinical studies conducted into Proactol fat binder. A report by the TNO Institute concluded:
"Patented fibre complex of Opuntia ficus indica is able to bind to fat and thus prevent the absorption of approximately 28.3% in the gastrointestinal tract."We also found an InQpharm study investigating whether Proactol affected the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A and E. The report concluded that, while effectively binding to dietary fat, Proactol had no affect on the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.
Other studies we found had similar conclusions, with Proactol preventing the absorption of 25%-30% of fat in all studies.
What appears to be lacking, however, is a double-blind study carried out using people in their home environment. Things which appear to work in the lab often aren't as effective in the real world, so we cannot completely endorse Proactol until such a study is carried out.
Update: As of February 2009, such a study has been carried out. A 2-armed randomised double-blind placebo controlled study was carried out in Berlin. Participants were split into two groups, one taking Proactol while the other took a placebo. The study concluded:
"Compared to placebo, the fibre complex [Proactol] significantly increased fecal fat excretion, reduced body weight (and BMI) and increased feeling of satiety. These were all achieved together with a very good tolerability."
Is Proactol Safe?
During our research we have found no evidence of side effects in Proactol beyond a small change in stool consistency in some people. This causes at most only a little discomfort and appears to be reduced by drinking more water with the Proactol. None of the studies have found any other side effects.Proactol Fat Binder Conclusions
Proactol is not a miracle pill, it will not cause you to shed 20 pounds in a week, and it is all the better for it. The only way for long-term weight loss is to gradually lose it, a few pounds a week. Proactol, in conjunction with some basic healthy eating and exercise guidelines, will help you to do this. Its proven results, natural ingredients (fully organic and suitable for vegetarians and vegans), and lack of side effects make Proactol our first 5 star product.
